Farmers Markets in Manitowoc & Two Rivers

July 31, 2016

What a great day at the farmers markets in Manitowoc and Two Rivers on Saturday, July 31! The weather was perfect, and we got to greet shoppers with information about voting. Madison volunteer Tom Poppe and I hit the road at 5AM to get to Manitowoc in time for the market to open, and four enthusiastic members of the Manitowoc County LWV were there to welcome us and help answer voter questions and distribute information. After a couple of hours we moved on to Two Rivers, where another team of Manitowoc County League volunteers joined us.

It was too close to the August 9 Primary Election to register voters, but we told them they could still register with their municipal clerk or at their polling place on Election Day. Did you know that in some states you have to be registered 30 days before an election or you don’t get to vote? Wisconsin encourages voting by offering people more options, and it works! Our state is near the top in the nation for voter turnout.

There was a lot to talk about with voters, because of the excellent new court ruling just the day before that will make it easier for people to obtain a photo ID and cast a ballot in the November election. Recent court rulings won’t affect the August 9 Primary, though.

Some people were surprised to hear there is a statewide election on Tuesday, August 9. It’s the Partisan Primary, in which the parties will select their best candidate for U.S. Senate, Congress, the state legislature and some county positions. Check out VOTE411.org for more information – and vote!
