After months of planning, reviewing designs and choosing a van and materials, we finally unveiled the colorful LWV Gear Up to Vote minivan on Monday morning in a friendly event at the Madison Senior Center, with yummy refreshments provided by Capitol Centre Market. We were thrilled to see 40 people present.

While I was introducing the tour, my co-workers in the LWV state office, Erin Grunze and Alexandra Graff, pulled the cover (provided by Wilde East Towne Honda) off the van, revealing upbeat messaging and a lively design by our friends at designCraft Advertising.

It was heartening to hear the encouraging and grateful words of Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Madison City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl, who thanked the Dane County League for its unfailing commitment to serving voters in the area.

Prairie Hills Neighborhood Association president Gloria Meyer (who’s also a League member) explained why she invited the League to make its first Gear Up to Vote tour stop later in the day in her neighborhood, where many citizens have recently moved and need to register or update their registration before the fall elections.

Melanie Ramey, past president and a board member of the state League, wrapped up the program by explaining why she wanted to launch the tour, which was her brainchild. Motivated by legislative efforts to prevent the League from registering voters, she decided to take the League on the road in a visible way to keep registering and educating voters.
