Minivan travels across Wisconsin to encourage voting

Don't be surprised if you see a group of women driving around Wisconsin in a colorful minivan that reads “Gear up to Vote.”

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, in collaboration with local leagues in 18 communities across the state, has organized a statewide tour called Gear up to Vote. Members are traveling the state in a minivan that will stop at community events to register, educate and assist voters. The tour launched in mid-July and will go through October.

This is the Wisconsin league's first attempt at a statewide tour, according to Erin Grunze, voter education coordinator for the league.

“Melanie Ramey's the brains behind the project,” Grunze admitted. “She was fired up by recent rulings that restricted voters, and she wanted to do something that was visible and that was about connecting with voters.”

Ramey, a board member of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, said she was worried it would be harder for some citizens to vote when Wisconsin switched to online voter registration.
